The Holy See Press Office has officially confirmed that Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to hold an audience with American Secretary of State Marco Rubio on May 7. This confirmation follows earlier reports from Sunday evening, which cited anonymous sources indicating Rubio's planned visit to Italy and the Vatican. The reported purpose of this visit is to address and potentially mend strained relations with both the Italian government and the Holy See. These tensions reportedly stem from recent criticisms by President Donald Trump directed at both Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's government in Italy and the Vatican itself.

President Trump had publicly criticized the Italian government for what he perceived as insufficient support in the ongoing conflict in Iran. Furthermore, he had also condemned the head of the Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV, describing him as "WEAK on Crime." The anonymous sources also suggested that Secretary of State Rubio, who is of Cuban-American Catholic heritage, would use the opportunity to discuss the severe humanitarian situation on the Caribbean island of Cuba, which has been under communist rule for nearly seven decades.

The Vatican, through its press office, has previously rejected media characterizations of poor relations between the United States and the Holy See. Pope Leo XIV has also publicly stated that he is not seeking a confrontation or feud with President Trump. The White House reportedly responded positively to these assertions, indicating a willingness to de-escalate tensions.

Vatican News reported that Secretary of State Rubio's meeting with Pope Leo XIV will take place at the Apostolic Palace within the Vatican. While the Holy See did not provide specific details regarding the topics of discussion, it was noted that Pope Leo XIV had met with Secretary of State Rubio approximately one year prior. That meeting occurred shortly after Pope Leo XIV, the first American-born pontiff, was elected to lead the Vatican following the passing of Pope Francis.

The initial report of Secretary of State Rubio's visit emerged from the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera on Sunday. The publication characterized the visit as a diplomatic effort aimed at improving the relationship between Rome, Washington, and the Holy See. This comes after President Trump engaged in a public dispute in April, during which he allegedly claimed the Vatican was fostering "fear of the Trump Administration." He also reportedly referred to the Pope as "WEAK on Crime."

During this period of public disagreement, President Trump also shared an artificial intelligence-generated image that appeared to depict him in a manner resembling Jesus Christ. He later deleted the image, stating he believed it to be a depiction of himself as a doctor. Prior to these exchanges, Pope Leo XIV had made several public statements that seemed to align with President Trump's foreign policy agenda. These included raising concerns about the persecution of Christians in Nigeria and advocating for reduced mass migration from the Middle East.

Addressing the media later, Pope Leo XIV clarified that comments perceived by some as targeting President Trump were actually drafted long before any perceived disruptions. He emphasized that he was not attempting to engage in a debate with the president, stating that such a course of action was "not in my interest at all." This statement aimed to distance his remarks from the ongoing political discourse and potential conflicts.

The Italian government, similarly, does not appear to be actively seeking a confrontation with the United States. However, the ongoing war in Iran has introduced some discord between Washington and Rome. Reports indicated that Italy had not permitted U.S. bombers to utilize Italian airbases en route to the conflict zone. This situation led President Trump to threaten the withdrawal of American troops from Italy, expressing frustration that the country had "not been any help to us" in the current military engagement.

In a separate development, Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, in an interview with Breitbart News published this past weekend, commended President Trump for his "courage" in pursuing policies that often faced opposition from European officials and left-leaning media. Salvini stated, "I thank President Trump for the courage and for the cultural foundation he is giving to an economic and political project, because it is fundamental to give a cultural, value-based and ideal foundation — otherwise everything passes." He also highlighted that his government's officials were "the only ones who openly supported President Trump, both in the first and in the second term" and expressed a desire to visit the United States in the near future.

During public events on Sunday, including the traditional Regina Caeli prayer, Pope Leo XIV did not offer any explicit indication of an upcoming meeting with the American Secretary of State. Instead, he delivered a brief statement in observance of World Press Freedom Day, generally discouraging elitism and advocating for broader accessibility. "Dear friends, in the old world in which we are still journeying, what attracts attention are exclusive places, experiences accessible only to a few, and the privilege of entering where others cannot," the Pope remarked. "In the new world into which the risen One leads us, however, what is most valuable is within everyone’s reach. Yet this does not make it any less attractive."

The timing of Secretary of State Rubio's visit coincides with the anniversary of Pope Leo XIV's election. Some reports suggest that Rubio's agenda may extend beyond bilateral relations. An anonymous source speaking to USA Today indicated that Rubio is expected to address the escalating persecution of dissidents and Christians in Cuba. This situation has intensified recently, coinciding with a significant growth in various Christian denominations and the overt inclusion of Christian themes in pro-democracy movements on the island over the past decade.

Under the previous pontificate of Pope Francis, the Vatican had played a role in mediating an agreement between the United States, under former President Barack Obama, and the Cuban regime. This mediation reportedly aimed to facilitate increased financial flows to the Cuban government. Pope Francis also refrained from condemning Cuba's human rights abuses and sent a message of condolence upon the death of Fidel Castro. Pope Leo XIV has not yet made any significant public statements or pronouncements regarding Cuba, nor has he indicated any intention to continue the policies of his predecessor toward the island nation. The Cuban government extended an invitation to Pope Leo XIV to visit shortly after his election, but the Holy See has not publicly responded to this invitation.
