Anthropic bosses are set to meet senior White House officials amid fresh national security concerns surrounding the company’s latest AI release. The talks are planned for Monday in Washington, DC, between Anthropic executives and representatives from the US Department of Commerce, according to two people familiar with the matter. The meeting comes after Anthropic blocked public access to its most recent AI tool release last Friday, a move the firm says followed a government prohibition on allowing foreign nationals to access the technology.
The tools at issue are called Fable 5 and Mythos 5. Fable 5 is a version made available to the public with added safeguards, while Mythos 5 has different controls and is restricted to a select group of organisations. Both are variants of Claude Mythos, a newer Anthropic AI model that sparked attention when, in April, the company began preview and testing with a relatively small set of organisations, including some government departments.
Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei is expected to attend the meeting with Secretary Lutnick, a source said. A White House spokesperson declined to comment, and representatives from Commerce and Anthropic did not respond to requests for comment.
Anthropic noted last week that making a version of Mythos publicly available “comes with risks.” It added that Fable’s capabilities “exceed those of any model we’ve ever made generally available.” Within days of the release, the US government said it had become aware of a potential “jailbreak,” an opening for someone to make the AI tool do something it was not intended to do, and Anthropic said it had only received verbal evidence of the purported jailbreak vulnerability.
Despite tensions, the company previously met senior White House officials in a meeting described as productive. The Monday Commerce meeting is expected to include more documentation of the alleged issue, according to one person familiar with the matter. It remains unclear whether Anthropic will be able to restore access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 after the meeting.
