Hundreds of households in North Lincolnshire that depend on heating oil for domestic fuel will receive a £300 support payment from the district council. This initiative aims to alleviate the burden of rising heating and energy costs for residents who are not connected to the main gas grid.
The council leader, Rob Waltham, emphasized that residents off the gas grid should not be disadvantaged. He stated, "Residents should not be left behind simply because they are off the gas grid." This support comes as prices for heating oil are not subject to the price cap set by regulator Ofgem, unlike gas and electricity.
In March, the government allocated approximately £50 million in support for households grappling with high heating oil expenses. These sharp price increases were partly attributed to the conflict in Iran, which has impacted global energy markets.
Mr. Waltham acknowledged the significant financial pressure faced by many households. "We know many households have faced significant increases in heating oil costs and for some residents, particularly older people and those on fixed incomes, those rises have caused real concern," he said.
He further highlighted North Lincolnshire Council's commitment to providing substantial assistance. "While some councils have offered very limited support, we have been as generous as possible with the funding allocated to North Lincolnshire because we know the pressure many rural households are under," he added.
The council has begun contacting eligible households that had previously registered their interest. These individuals will receive further details regarding the support payment. The application process remains open for those who have not yet applied.
A council spokesperson confirmed that successful applicants will receive the £300 payment directly into their bank accounts. This direct deposit aims to ensure swift and efficient delivery of the financial aid to those in need.
