Audlem Charity Shop in Cheshire has experienced a dramatic increase in revenue after shifting its sales strategy to primarily operate outdoors on Saturdays. Previously, the shop opened six days a week and generated only a few hundred pounds weekly. However, by reducing trading to a single day and displaying a significant portion of donated goods on outdoor stalls, the shop now achieves daily takings between £1,200 and £1,500. These figures can surge to over £2,000 on days when the village hosts special events.

Vice chair Sheila Julian, one of approximately 35 volunteers, attributes the success to the shop's unique appeal. "I think the attraction is we are like a cross between a giant boot fair and a market stall, and people love it," she stated. The proceeds from the shop directly benefit local health-related charities, with St Luke's Hospice Cheshire being the primary recipient.

Chair Helen Beardshall noted that prior to the change, the shop was fortunate to earn £400 in a week. The transformation began a few years ago, coinciding with the COVID-19 pandemic when market stalls were permitted to resume trading. Julian proposed the idea of selling items outdoors to another volunteer, marking the start of the shop's significant turnaround.

The substantial increase in takings has been described as "huge" by Beardshall. She explained that customers are drawn to the opportunity to rummage, find bargains, and are enticed by the visible stock as they pass by. The outdoor setup has proven resilient, with only severe weather conditions impacting operations, leading to slightly reduced hours during winter.

Beardshall highlighted the exceptional performance last year, mentioning two separate occasions where the shop exceeded £2,000 in a single day. She also emphasized the positive impact on the village, drawing visitors from "far and wide." In addition to the outdoor sales, some items are sold online, and select stock is taken to auction by the volunteer team.

Julian praised the quality of donations received, stating, "We have some fabulous donations." This high quality allows the shop to set attractive prices, thereby maximizing revenue. The volunteers are reportedly "immensely proud" of their contributions, finding motivation in the positive feedback from charities about how the funds are utilized to assist people.
