American Airlines has announced it will equip more than 500 of its narrow-body aircraft with SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet service, marking a significant expansion for Elon Musk's space venture in the aviation sector. The airline plans to begin installing Starlink on approximately 500 Airbus A321neo planes starting in early 2024.
This move positions Starlink as a key provider of in-flight Wi-Fi, having already secured contracts with other major carriers such as United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and Alaska Airlines. American Airlines had been evaluating both Starlink and Amazon's Project Kuiper for its connectivity needs as recently as March.
While American Airlines is adopting Starlink for its narrow-body fleet, a company spokesman indicated that there are no immediate plans to alter the Wi-Fi providers on its Boeing aircraft, which currently utilize a combination of Viasat and Panasonic systems.
American Airlines has been actively enhancing its passenger experience, having introduced free in-flight Wi-Fi for its frequent flyer program members in January. This initiative follows similar upgrades by competitors like United and Delta Air Lines.
Delta Air Lines, for instance, announced in March that it would deploy Amazon's Project Kuiper for in-flight Wi-Fi across hundreds of its jets, with services expected to commence in 2028. The broader trend among airlines involves upgrading internet services to offer higher speeds, aiming to attract and retain higher-spending customers.
Beyond Wi-Fi, airlines are exploring additional revenue streams, including the implementation of personalized advertising for travelers. This competitive landscape is driving innovation in onboard services.
Meanwhile, SpaceX is preparing for a potentially record-breaking initial public offering (IPO) next month. The company's connectivity division, which encompasses Starlink, reported substantial revenue of $11.39 billion last year, accounting for 61% of its total sales, according to a recent IPO filing. This financial performance underscores the growing importance and market penetration of Starlink.
