Frontier Airlines said it will launch SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet on its aircraft in early 2027, marking a notable step for the ULCC as it expands onboard connectivity. Frontier currently does not offer in‑flight Wi‑Fi and joins a growing group of carriers adding Starlink to provide internet access at cruise altitude. The service will begin with Frontier’s first Airbus aircraft equipped with the Starlink hardware, a rollout confirmed by the airline on Tuesday.
CNBC has previously reported that Frontier was in talks with Starlink to add its first in‑flight Wi‑Fi service, a development first publicized in 2022. A Frontier spokeswoman declined to specify whether the service would be free for passengers. Major airlines with Starlink deals have, in some cases, offered complimentary access to loyalty members, though terms of Frontier’s arrangement were not disclosed.
Starlink, part of Elon Musk’s SpaceX, has signed agreements with more than 40 carriers globally, as airlines upgrade cabin offerings to meet rising expectations for reliable onboard connectivity. Frontier will join peers such as Volaris in Mexico, Wizz in Europe, Jetsmart in Chile, and Cebu Pacific in the Philippines—all investors in Indigo Partners, a private‑equity firm led by airline investor Bill Franke.
Budget carriers have faced pressure to upgrade from a strict no‑frills model as larger competitors expand premium offerings and front‑of‑cabin revenue. Frontier has signaled additional enhancements, including plans to introduce first‑class seating next year as part of its broader network strategy. The commercial terms of Frontier’s Starlink deal, like other carrier agreements, were not disclosed, and SpaceX did not immediately comment.
As connectivity becomes a growing expectation for travelers, Frontier’s move to add Wi‑Fi aligns with a broader industry push toward more capable onboard services, potentially supporting customer retention and fare competitiveness in the competitive ultra‑low‑cost segment.
